Gungner, Gungnir, (‘The Shaking’), Odin’s spear, one of his most important attributes. Gungner symbolizes Odin’s ruling status and his position as a god of war. According to Snorre’s Edda, it was forged by the two dwarfs Brok and Sindre, and it could penetrate everything. According to the edda poem Vølvens Spådom, the spear is used as an introductory signal to the war between aces and habits. Odin could consecrate his opponents to death by throwing Gungner over them as a prelude to battle; but he could also kill his “own” warriors, thereby making sure that the crowd of einherjer in Valhal was expanded. At the moment of death, warriors could dedicate themselves to Odin by scratching themselves with a spear. The spearhead was provided with a runic inscription. In the edda poem Hávamál, Odin uses the spear to mutilate himself during his self-sacrifice in the tree Yggdrasil. Armed with the spear, he rides out at Ragnarok to meet the enemies.
